JAZZ FOR THE SOUL: Robby Carrillo Quartet

Welcome drummer, recording artist, studio musician and educator, Robby Carrillo back to Jazz for the Soul featuring favorite jazz standards and some brilliant original compositions.  His band includes Nick Manson (piano), Andy Gross (sax) and Ben Hedquist (bass). More rhythm and groove is on the way! 100% of donations  for this concert will benefit “Kitchen on the Street” and/or “Fresh on Deck” See you there.

Robby Carrillo – Drummer, percussionist, and  educator, is based in Phoenix, Arizona. He began playing music  professionally at age 16. Carrillo attended Arizona State where he  received the Jazzbird Scholarship and studied jazz performance and  composition under Dom Moio and Michael Kocour. Carrillo has performed  with greats, Joe Lovano, Fred Forney, Michael Kocour, Armand Boatman,  Marty Ashby, Charles Lewis, and many others. He opened for Benny Golson  in Chicago at the famed Jazz Showcase. Carrillo is an in-demand drummer,  and seasoned studio musician. Currently, Carrillo is the drum set  instructor at Mesa Community College and Arizona Christian University.

Nick Manson Piano – A talented jazz pianist and  keyboardist, this two-time Emmy Award winning multifaceted musician is  also a producer who has excelled in several fields. His piano playing is  swinging, lyrical, consistently inventive and individual. Nick’s  performances are both accessible and creative, appealing to a wide  audience yet he remains true to himself. The list of notables Nick has  worked with includes B.B. King, Bud Shank, Diana Krall, Ernie Watts,  Brice Winston, just to name a few.

Andrew Gross Tenor Saxophone – Saxophonist and  educator – is the Music Director for Young Sounds of Arizona. Andrew  studied with jazz musicians, Chris Potter, Rufus Reid, Rich Perry, Tony  Malaby, Dewey Redman and Reggie Workman. He performs regularly with the  Phoenix Symphony and is called on to play studio gigs for others as well  as recording three projects of his own. He has served as featured  soloist on GCU Faculty Recitals and Thunder Big Band as well as Mesa  Community College’s Big Band.

Ben Hedquist – Bassist and composer – Ben teaches at  Glendale Community College and is one of the Valley’s most in-demand  bassists. Hedquist is known for his versatility and is at home playing  anything from jazz to classical music. Hedquist was a finalist in the  2016 European Double Bass Congress jazz bass competition held in Prague,  Czech Republic. He performs frequently with Michael Kocour, Jeff  Libman, Eric Rasmussen, Keith Kelly, Adam Roberts, and Dom Moio. He has  also performed with notables, Joe Locke, Peter Bernstein, George  Garzone, Miguel Zenon, Glenn Zaleski, John Hollenbeck, Chris Cheek,  George Colligan, Ben Wendel, and Lewis Nash. He can be found around the  valley performing his own projects. He released his first album “The  Mists of Uncertainty” in 2019.

All JFTS Concerts are FREE and open to the public. Doors open at 4:45pm. All donations received will benefit local and international humanitarian causes.
