JAZZ FOR THE SOUL: ZAZU West

January 25, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

WHAT TO EXPECT

ZAZU West is Phoenix’s premier ensemble dedicated to Gypsy Jazz, the style devoted to the legacy of the influential jazz guitar legend, Django Reinhardt. Whether you call it Gypsy Jazz, Jazz Manouche, or French Swing, the sound is infectious and unmistakably Django.
Playing unique Django compositions and traditional and contemporary jazz standards in the Gypsy style, ZAZU West creates a one-of-a-kind performance experience full of irresistible swing and improvisation with reckless abandon.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

ZAZU West carries on the legacy of Django Reinhardt’s French swing tradition. Known for their high-energy performances and refined artistry, they blend virtuosity, improvisation, and soulful melodies that bring Parisian jazz to life in the Valley.

  • Mike Fowler (lead guitar) – A versatile guitarist with roots in both jazz and classical styles, Fowler has established himself as a leading voice in Arizona’s Gypsy Jazz community.

  • Ryan Vance (rhythm guitar) – Brings driving swing rhythms and a strong background in acoustic jazz guitar, anchoring the group’s signature sound.

  • Vincent Thiefain (bass) – An accomplished bassist and educator, Thiefain has performed widely across jazz, classical, and chamber settings, bringing technical depth and lyrical phrasing to the ensemble.

  • Constance Genter (vocals) – Known for her expressive phrasing and warm tone, Genter adds a rich vocal dimension to ZAZU West, interpreting standards with elegance and emotional resonance.

  • Allen Ames (violin, guest artist) – A master of improvisation and longtime figure in Arizona jazz, Ames weaves dazzling violin lines that pay homage to Stéphane Grappelli while carving out his own unique voice.

Jazz for the Soul, an outreach of Music Serving the Word Ministries, is pleased to contribute 100% of donations from this concert to PRISM (People’s Response in Supporting Music), providing new, gently used, and refurbished musical instruments to underprivileged students through Title 1 Schools and other musical programs for kids.
