Lakeshore Music wraps its first season at Ravenscroft with a special presentation of five-time Grammy winner Billy Childs, who is among the most acclaimed jazz pianists/composers on the scene today.
His compositions and arrangements have received 16 Grammy nominations. The wins include Best Jazz Instrumental Album for “Rebirth”;” Best Arrangement, Instrumental & Vocal (featuring Renée Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma) for “New York Tendaberry”; Best Instrumental Composition for “The Path Among the Trees” and for “Into The Light” from his jazz-chamber releases “Autumn: In Moving Pictures” and “Lyric, Vol. 1,” respectively.
His fifth Grammy was for another volume of jazz-chamber music, which is an amalgam of jazz and classical, “Autumn: In Moving Pictures, Vol. 2.”
Childs was proficient at the piano by age 6. Among his early influences were Herbie Hancock, Keith Emerson and Chick Corea. He also credits classical composers, including Igor Stravinsky, for influencing his love of composition.
