Live from Ravenscroft
Please join us for the final Valley Jazz Cooperative performance of the school year! On Saturday, May 7, at 2:00 pm, Ravenscroft Hall presents the students of the VJC, under the direction of Russell Schmidt. They will be joined on stage by acclaimed saxophonist Lucas Pino.
The VJC Sapphire Ensemble will perform music by Oliver Nelson, Richard Rodgers, and Sonny Rollins. The VJC Indigo Big Band will play compositions by Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Chuck Marohnic, and Russell Schmidt. Guest artist Lucas Pino will be featured on both halves of the concert.
Lobby doors open at 1:15 pm; Ravenscroft Hall doors do not open until 1:30 pm.

Earlier the same day, in Ravenscroft’s Jazzbird Lounge, VJC guest artist Lucas Pino will offer an educational clinic, discussing improvisation and his approach to the creative process.
Music students of all ages are welcome to attend. The 60-minute clinic will begin at 10:00 am, with lobby doors opening at 9:45 am. This event is free and open to the public; no reservations are required.
About the artist…Originally from Phoenix, Lucas Pino grew up singing hymns in church, and in the choir at school. He started playing saxophone at age 10, and the first music he ever listened to was jazz. As a high school junior, Lucas won the Downbeat award for Best Instrumental Soloist in 2004. He attended the Brubeck Institute from 2005-2007, where he studied closely with Dave Brubeck. Lucas finished his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Jazz Performance at The New School in 2009. He attended Juilliard from 2009-2011, from which he received a Master of Music degree.
Lucas has played with such jazz greats as Carl Allen, Dave Brubeck, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, Benny Green, Jimmy Heath, Christian McBride, and David Sanborn. He has traveled extensively, performing in Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as throughout the United States and Canada. Lucas has appeared at venues such as the Blue Note, Dizzy’s, The Jazz Kitchen, The Jazz Standard, The Rex, Yoshi’s, and Chicago Symphony Hall. As a leader, his No Net Nonet maintained a monthly residency at Smalls in New York for more than seven years.
About the VJC…The Valley Jazz Cooperative was founded in 2016 and is an educational outreach of MSW Ministries. Instruction is focused on expanding the creativity of VJC participants and is offered free of charge to eligible, committed, passionate music students (grades 8-12).
