CHAMBER @ RAVENSCROFT: Ying Quartet

February 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in classical music, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its third decade, the Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications. Their performances regularly take place in many of the world’s most important concert halls; at the same time, the Quartet’s belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has also drawn the foursome to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace, schools, juvenile prisons, and the White House. In fact, the Ying Quartet’s constant quest to explore the creative possibilities of the string quartet has led it to an unusually diverse array of musical projects and interests. Ravenscroft is truly privileged to present the Ying Quartet.

About the artists… Violinist Robin Scott has soloed with orchestras including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre National de Lille (France), among others. Additionally, Scott has performed as a chamber musician in such venues as the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Perelman Theatre at the Kimmel Center, Weill Hall, and Town Hall in New York City. A founding member of the Ying Quartet, violinist Janet Ying has continued her quest for creative musicmaking, founding the “No Boundaries” series at Symphony Space in New York, combining string quartet music with poetry, dance, popular music, magic, and more, as well as collaborating with diverse musicians such as Menahem Pressler, Jon Manasse, Mike Seeger, and the Turtle Island Quartet. As violist of the Ying Quartet, Phillip Ying has performed across the United States, Europe and Asia. He is a recipient of the Naumburg Award for Chamber Music, has won a Grammy for a collaborative recording with the Turtle Island Quartet, and has been nominated three additional times, most recently for a collaborative album with jazz pianist Billy Childs. With the Ying Quartet, cellist David Ying has performed worldwide in celebrated music venues from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. His recorded work with the Quartet ranges from traditional (including Tchaikovsky’s three string quartets and his Souvenir de Florence, op. 70) to contemporary (as with three albums of their LifeMusic commissions, an innovative, new music initiative spanning two decades).

Before the concert, please join us in Jazzbird for an hour of solo piano and choose from a fine selection of wine, local craft beers, and catered dinner options available for purchase. Doors open for dining, bar service, and live music at 5:30 pm.
