The Mercer Patterson Quintet is a contemporary jazz ensemble originating in the Metro-Detroit area. Having recently transitioned to the East Coast, they often play a variety of originals, written by all members of the band, and are influenced by a wide range of styles and artists. Various influences include but are not limited to the music of Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and Steve Lehman.
Formed their freshman year at the University of Michigan, The Quintet has had the opportunity to study and receive guidance from the likes of Terrell Stafford, Robert Hurst, Brian Lynch, Andy Milne, Ellen Rowe, Caroline Davis, and Chuck Bergeron. While studying, they were featured in their department’s Jazz Showcase in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. They also were featured in the University of Michigan’s Collage Concert, featuring the best work from the entire School of Music Theater and Dance in both 2022 and 2023. Through the university, they recorded their first album, “Eternity Switch” in the summer of 2022.
The Quintet has performed at several venues throughout the Ann Arbor-Metro Detroit Area, such as the Blue Llama, The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, The Blind Pig, the Detroit Jazz Festival, as well as the Shapeshifter Lab in NYC. During the summer of 2023, The Quintet had the opportunity to participate in the esteemed Jazz Aspen-Snowmass Academy, led by Chuck Bergeron and Christian McBride, performing at numerous venues and recording a slew of new originals. Their newest single “Cloak and Dagger” is available on all streaming platforms.
