American flugelhornist DMITRI MATHENY has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, releasing twelve CDs and touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dmitri Matheny is an acclaimed American flugelhornist, composer, and educator recognized as one of the leading voices on his instrument in contemporary jazz. Born in Nashville and raised in Georgia and Arizona, Matheny began studying piano as a child before transitioning to trumpet and eventually dedicating himself entirely to the flugelhorn. After studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy and graduating magna cum laude from Berklee College of Music, he became the protégé of legendary jazz flugelhornist Art Farmer, whose mentorship helped shape Matheny’s lyrical style and distinctive sound.

Over the course of his career, Matheny has toured internationally and collaborated with renowned jazz artists including Max Roach, James Moody, Joe Lovano, and Tommy Flanagan, while also performing with popular music acts such as The Temptations and Martha Reeves. In addition to releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums as a bandleader, he is widely respected for his contributions to jazz education and outreach, presenting workshops and performances for audiences around the world. Known for his expressive tone and melodic improvisation, Matheny continues to be celebrated as one of the most accomplished flugelhorn players in modern jazz.
