ABOUT THE ARTIST
James Fernando is an acclaimed Philadelphia-based pianist and composer whose music lives at the intersection of jazz, classical, and contemporary influences. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, where he graduated summa cum laude, Fernando has earned recognition from DownBeat Magazine and the National YoungArts Foundation, won first prize at the West Virginia International Piano Competition, and was selected as a Strathmore Artist in Residence.
Throughout his career, Fernando has performed internationally and collaborated with celebrated musicians including GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton, GRAMMY winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, steelpan virtuoso Victor Provost, and acclaimed saxophonist Chris Cheek.
An accomplished recording artist, Fernando has released six albums, culminating in the 2026 release of Philly 3, the debut recording from the James Fernando Trio. Steeped in the traditions of artists such as Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, and Thelonious Monk, the trio combines compelling original compositions, inventive arrangements, and spirited improvisation to bring a fresh perspective to the classic jazz piano trio.
