Jazzbird Nights: Michael Collins Trio

November 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

WHAT TO EXPECT

What happens when you start with the unforgettable, timeless melodies from Leonard Bernstein’s classic musical and re-imagine each one into a new plane of existence, full of joy, hope, mystery, tranquility and groove?

West Side Story by the Michael Collins Trio is a wonderful convergence of Michael’s incredible arranging and fluency in the language of modern jazz; the inspired, musical, and interactive drumming of Erik Teichmann; bassist Sean Brogan’s soulful, expressive playing; and the immortal spirit of Bernstein’s masterpiece.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mike Collins is a pianist, composer, and arranger recognized for his modern approach to jazz piano and his deeply melodic compositional style. Originally from Arizona, Collins studied at the Thornton School of Music at USC, where he trained with acclaimed jazz pianists Shelly Berg and Russ Ferrante and studied composition with noted Los Angeles jazz educators. He also developed his musical foundation through mentorships with respected Arizona jazz figures, helping shape the distinctive voice that now defines his work.

In addition to leading the Mike Collins Trio, Collins has earned recognition as an award-winning composer and arranger. His big band composition “Sketch Artist” received honorable mention in the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards, and his arrangement work has appeared on Grammy-nominated recordings, including Arturo O’Farrill’s 40 Acres and a Burro. Through projects with the Superstition Jazz Orchestra and his own trio, Collins continues to build a reputation for inventive arrangements, expressive piano work, and a forward-thinking vision of contemporary jazz.
